Bihar to ban auto rickshaws running on diesel

Bihar state government has announced a ban on auto-rickshaws running on diesel on 6 November 2019. It will be effective from 31 January 2021. The move comes after Patna recorded the worst air quality of the season in India on 5 November 2019, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching alarmingly high levels. The AQI remained at 324 in Delhi, but it reached 414 in Patna.
All India Road Transport and Workers Federation secretary, Patna, Ranjeet Kumar said that there are around 30,000 auto-rickshaws running in the Bihar capital currently. The owners of the auto-rickshaws will be encouraged to switch over to Compressed natural gas (CNG) or battery-operated systems. The state decided the ban in a meeting chaired by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
