The 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Water Management was held in Pune

The 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Water Management was held in Pune on 6 November. It was inaugurated by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the Union Minister of Jalshakti. He announced that India would achieve the target of providing safe drinking water to everyone by 2024.

Highlights:
♦ India extracts half of the total groundwater used by the entire world. A study says that groundwater usage in India is more than the combined groundwater usage of the USA and China. The study of India’s groundwater aquifers is expected to be completed in the next two years.
♦ The conference highlighted the need for the states to work towards seamless data transfer on water.
♦ 89% of the water that is available in the country is used by the agriculture sector.  The meeting suggested that saving about 5% to 10% of the water used by agriculture can help to meet the drinking water requirement of the country for the next 50 years.
